The notice of admission for all the academic programmes of the Centre is generally published by the University in leading Indian newspapers in the month of January-February every year.

Sample entrance-examination papers of previous years can be obtained through Examination Branch, JNU campus, New Delhi 110067 personally or through post.

 

MA in Philosophy
The selection of candidates for M.A. in Philosophy is done through a written examination conducted in various Centres in India and South Asia during the month of May every year.

The applicants for the M.A. programme will be examined in the themes and issues studied in a standard B.A. philosophy course in Indian universities. The minimum eligibility criterion of a prospective candidate should be an undergraduate degree (equivalent to Bachelor's degree) under 10+2+3 pattern of education with at least 50% mark in case of the candidates from the field of Social Sciences and Humanities, and 55% marks in case of the candidates from fields of Sciences and Technology. The admission test will carry a total of 100 marks. The purpose of the test is to select those candidates who are capable of demonstrating philosophical aptitude, analytical skills and ability for original thinking.

 

M.Phil./Ph.D. Programmes 
The selection of candidates for the M.Phil./Ph.D. programme is carried out at two levels: first, the screening of candidates through a written examination conducted in various Centres in India and South Asia during the month of May and second, a viva-voce at the centre in the early part of July for those who qualify in the written examination. The written examination carries a total of 75 marks while the viva-voce carries a total of 25 marks. 


The applicants will be examined in the themes and issues covered in a standard M.A. philosophy courses in Indian universities. The candidates will be tested for their in-depth understanding of philosophical issues, methods and texts. They are expected to be familiar with the debates in contemporary philosophy and with debates that are interdisciplinary in character having a bearing on philosophical inquiry. The candidates are required to bring a well-written research proposal at the time of viva-voce.

 

Direct Ph.D. Programme
The Centre also considers application for the Direct Ph.D. programme from outstanding candidates having finished their M.Phil. degree and/or having equivalent publications in philosophy. The selection process takes place through a viva-voce in the early part of July. Prospective candidates are required to bring a well-written research proposal of 1500-2000 words at the time of viva-voce.

A warm welcome to the modified and updated website of the Centre for East Asian Studies. The East Asian region has been at the forefront of several path-breaking changes since 1970s beginning with the redefining the development architecture with its State-led development model besides emerging as a major region in the global politics and a key hub of the sophisticated technologies. The Centre is one of the thirteen Centres of the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi that provides a holistic understanding of the region.

Initially, established as a Centre for Chinese and Japanese Studies, it subsequently grew to include Korean Studies as well. At present there are eight faculty members in the Centre. Several distinguished faculty who have now retired include the late Prof. Gargi Dutt, Prof. P.A.N. Murthy, Prof. G.P. Deshpande, Dr. Nranarayan Das, Prof. R.R. Krishnan and Prof. K.V. Kesavan. Besides, Dr. Madhu Bhalla served at the Centre in Chinese Studies Programme during 1994-2006. In addition, Ms. Kamlesh Jain and Dr. M. M. Kunju served the Centre as the Documentation Officers in Chinese and Japanese Studies respectively.

The academic curriculum covers both modern and contemporary facets of East Asia as each scholar specializes in an area of his/her interest in the region. The integrated course involves two semesters of classes at the M. Phil programme and a dissertation for the M. Phil and a thesis for Ph. D programme respectively. The central objective is to impart an interdisciplinary knowledge and understanding of history, foreign policy, government and politics, society and culture and political economy of the respective areas. Students can explore new and emerging themes such as East Asian regionalism, the evolving East Asian Community, the rise of China, resurgence of Japan and the prospects for reunification of the Korean peninsula. Additionally, the Centre lays great emphasis on the building of language skills. The background of scholars includes mostly from the social science disciplines; History, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, International Relations and language.

Several students of the centre have been recipients of prestigious research fellowships awarded by Japan Foundation, Mombusho (Ministry of Education, Government of Japan), Saburo Okita Memorial Fellowship, Nippon Foundation, Korea Foundation, Nehru Memorial Fellowship, and Fellowship from the Chinese and Taiwanese Governments. Besides, students from Japan receive fellowship from the Indian Council of Cultural Relations.
