This course will examine the crises in art history and theories visual representation that led to the emergence of the field of Visual Culture. It shall look at the Indian condition, and specific areas of India's own popular culture charting diverse technologies that include print, photography, textile and craft histories, advertising and the graphic novel, engaging with key debates around realism, global capitalism, nationalism, gender and race. The factors of commerce, sacred representation, public ritual and regional variations weave through these concerns.
