CSSEIP Academic Programme

The CSDE has been offering a direct Ph.D. Programme since 2009-10. It has recently launched an M.Phil/Ph.D programme in 2015.

 

Eligibility for Direct Ph.D. 
Only those candidates shall be considered for direct admission to the Ph.D. programme who have:

  • Awarded M.Phil degree in any area of Social Sciences or at least research experience of 2 years in a reputed institution with research publications of commensurate standard.
  • Demonstrated their academic capability by preparing a well developed research proposal of roughly 2000 words, drawing out a specific theme, statement of the problem, literature review and relevant research methodology.

 

Eligibility for M.Phil / Ph.D. Programme

  • Admission to the integrated M. Phil./ Ph.D. programme is based on a written test and viva-voce examination. The candidates short-listed after the written examination are expected to bring a research proposal of about 1000-1500 words at the time of viva-voce.
  • The M.Phil programme carries a total of 32 credits (16 credits for course work and 16 credits for the Dissertation) and has to be completed in a maximum of four semesters. The course work includes of compulsory and optional papers and consists of a combination of lectures, preparation and presentation of seminar papers, and participation in discussions on work in progress. The students are required to finish the entire course-work in the first year of the M.Phil. Admission to Ph.D. programme is not automatic and is governed by prescribed university norms.

The Centre courses focuses on a number of thematic issues such as Histories from the Margins; Agrarian Change and Exclusions; Minorities; Ethnicities; Political economy of Discrimination; Dalits and Exclusion; Marginalisations, Social Policies for Inclusion, Development and exclusion etc.

 

Main and Allied subjects for purpose of Eligibility for admission to Ph.D. programme: Political Science, History, Sociology, Anthropology, Economics, Geography, Education, Psychology and Law.

 

CSDE M.Phil/Ph.D Course Structure

The course structure that CSDE plans to offer for M.Phil/PhD is as follows:
1. Two Core Courses = 8 credits (Students have to take these as compulsory courses)
2. [a] Optional Courses 4 credits each (Students can choose any two from this set) = 8 credits

1. Compulsory Courses: Total = 8 credits.

Core 1 - Discrimination & Exclusion: Theoretical and Conceptual Frameworks - 4 credits.
Core 2 - Research Methods for the study of Discrimination & Exclusion - 4 credits. 
Students have to take these as compulsory courses; one in each semester.

Optional Courses: Total = 8 credits

A warm welcome to the modified and updated website of the Centre for East Asian Studies. The East Asian region has been at the forefront of several path-breaking changes since 1970s beginning with the redefining the development architecture with its State-led development model besides emerging as a major region in the global politics and a key hub of the sophisticated technologies. The Centre is one of the thirteen Centres of the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi that provides a holistic understanding of the region.

Initially, established as a Centre for Chinese and Japanese Studies, it subsequently grew to include Korean Studies as well. At present there are eight faculty members in the Centre. Several distinguished faculty who have now retired include the late Prof. Gargi Dutt, Prof. P.A.N. Murthy, Prof. G.P. Deshpande, Dr. Nranarayan Das, Prof. R.R. Krishnan and Prof. K.V. Kesavan. Besides, Dr. Madhu Bhalla served at the Centre in Chinese Studies Programme during 1994-2006. In addition, Ms. Kamlesh Jain and Dr. M. M. Kunju served the Centre as the Documentation Officers in Chinese and Japanese Studies respectively.

The academic curriculum covers both modern and contemporary facets of East Asia as each scholar specializes in an area of his/her interest in the region. The integrated course involves two semesters of classes at the M. Phil programme and a dissertation for the M. Phil and a thesis for Ph. D programme respectively. The central objective is to impart an interdisciplinary knowledge and understanding of history, foreign policy, government and politics, society and culture and political economy of the respective areas. Students can explore new and emerging themes such as East Asian regionalism, the evolving East Asian Community, the rise of China, resurgence of Japan and the prospects for reunification of the Korean peninsula. Additionally, the Centre lays great emphasis on the building of language skills. The background of scholars includes mostly from the social science disciplines; History, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, International Relations and language.

Several students of the centre have been recipients of prestigious research fellowships awarded by Japan Foundation, Mombusho (Ministry of Education, Government of Japan), Saburo Okita Memorial Fellowship, Nippon Foundation, Korea Foundation, Nehru Memorial Fellowship, and Fellowship from the Chinese and Taiwanese Governments. Besides, students from Japan receive fellowship from the Indian Council of Cultural Relations.
