Chandrabhaga Hostel is one of the 18 hostels of the JNU, and is located in the western part of Paschimabad–II. It is a co-ed hostel that started functioning in 2004. Girl’s wing has two blocs with three floors each. Boy’s wing also has two blocs with three floors each. The hostel has a total of 204 rooms: 102 for girls and 102 for boys. It also has two dormitories for girls with a total strength of 40 beds.
The Hostel has only double seated rooms. Each resident is provided with study table, chair, bed, and a book shelf. Each room has two built-in cupboards with doors. Water coolers are installed at appropriate points in the building to provide cool and filtered safe drinking water to the residents. In bathrooms, toilets and mess there is a 24 hour water supply. The hostel offers mess facility throughout the year. The residents are served delicious, healthy and nutritious food at a very mess fee. The mess is privately managed by a contractor on no-profit no-less basis. The functioning of the mess involves active participation of the students. Mess committee consists of six students are elected by the residents. They collectively decide the Menu and other issues of the Mess, and are in constant touch with the residents to take their feedback on the quality of the food served. By turn, one out of the six Mess Committee members acts as the Mess Secretary for a period of one month to be succeeded by another member. The Mess Warden, as the ex-officio- Chairperson of the Mess Committee, oversees the functioning of the mess. Anything pertaining to mess is discussed and decided in the regular monthly mess committee meetings. The hostel has a tea stall, and a laundry facility for the residents within its premises.
The hostel provides a gymnasium and a television room each for girls and boys wing. Reading room and visitor’s room are common for the residents. The residents are also provided with adequate sporting facilities. The hotel has table tennis table, badminton court and volley ball ground. It seeks to provide an excellent study and cordial social environment to the residents.
The hostel is built in such a way that the residents get natural light and ventilation. There is a beautiful green lawn surrounded by trees like amaltash, neem, keekar, etc in front of the hostel. The residents can be seen sitting in groups in lawn in the evening, discussing and debating. A beautiful garden with varieties of flowers decorates the main entrance of the hostel. The hostel is surrounded by two other hostels namely Lohit and Shipra on the northern side and Multi-storied residential flats on the Southern side of the Pachimabad II. Behind the hostel lies a lush green jungle with neelgais, rabbits, peacocks, and varieties of other flora and fauna.
