After an initial examination of the concept of the modern in the internationalist context, this course will be organized around the study of a series of linked periods covering the history of the visual arts in India in the last century as well as contemporary visual art practices. Aimed at contextualizing the various shifts that have take place in the arts, the course examines various social formations and working methods of artists as well as links with international movements in the recent past that have shaped the creative and critical concerns of Modernism in India.
