Prof. Dinesh Mohan, SES named as 2019 Highly Cited Researchers by Clarivate Analytics for the SIXTH consecutive year
Professor Dinesh Mohan from School of Environmental Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University named in the annual Highly Cited Researchers 2019 List. Prof Mohan is pleased to share that, for the SIXTH consecutive year in the top one percent of his field globally for most highly cited research. Prof Mohan was first included in this illustrious list in 2014, and has remained there since.
The list of Highly Cited Researchers 2019 from the Web of Science Group identifies scientists and social scientists who have demonstrated significant broad influence, reflected through their publication of multiple papers frequently cited by their peers during the last decade. Researchers are selected for their exceptional influence and performance in one or more of 21 fields (those used in Essential Science Indicators,1 or ESI) or across several fields.6,216 researchers are named Highly Cited Researchers in 2019 – 3,725 in specific fields and 2,491 for cross-field performance. This is the second year that researchers with cross-field impact have been identified. The number of researchers selected in each field is based on the square root of the population of authors listed on the field’s highly cited papers. The number of those with cross-field influence is determined by finding those who have influence equivalent to those identified in the 21 fields.
For the Highly Cited Researchers 2019 analysis, the papers surveyed were the most recent papers available to us – those published and cited during 2008-2018 and which at the end of 2018 ranked in the top 1% by citations for their ESI field and year (the definition of a highly cited paper). For the first time this year, a filter was applied to remove researchers whose level of self-citation exceeded, by far, the typical patterns of each field. This procedure has and will continue to help maintain the purpose of our selection process and the integrity of our data: to identify researchers with broad community influence and not those whose citation profile is narrow and substantially self-generated.
Dr. Dinesh Mohan is a full professor in the School of Environmental Sciences at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He is an Elected Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), London. He is also an adjunct professor at Chemistry Department, Mississippi State University, USA and at International Centre for Applied Climate Science University of Southern, Queensland, Australia. Prof. Mohan is author/co-author of more than 135 articles including research papers and reviews published in high impact factor journals, book and encyclopedia chapters with total citations of >28,600 with an h factor of 67. He has also filled two patents. Recently, Prof. Mohan has received the prestigious Clarivate Analytics India Research Excellence - Citation Awards 2019.
His current research interests include water and wastewater monitoring, assessment, modeling and remediation, development of sustainable sorbents for arsenic, fluoride, nitrate, iron, phenols, pharmaceuticals, pesticides remediation from water, biofuels production from lignocellulosic biomass and crop residues, Prof Dinesh Mohan and his research team have come up with a sustainable solution to biomass/stubble burning by converting these agricultural residues into biochars. These biochars can be used to amend the soil resulting into the improvement of soil fertility, crop production and C-sequestration.

Prof. Dinesh Mohan, School of Environmental Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University has received prestigious Clarivate Analytics India Research Excellence - Citation Awards 2019, in the Engineering & Technology category (the 7th edition) from Prof. Ashutosh Sharma, Secretary, Department of Science & Technology, and Dr Bhushan Patwardhan, Vice Chairman, UGC at an evening event at the Hotel Sheraton, New Delhi. Clarivate Analytics has presented these awards to identify and recognize the most influential researchers and institutions for their outstanding and pioneering research contribution to the country.
The awards were based on in-depth analysis conducted on data from the Web of Science citation index and InCites – a research performance and benchmarking tool. Highly cited research publications that imply high impact research published during the period 2012-2018 were an important criterion, among others, for the analysis. An expert panel at the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) took the metrics and qualitative review into consideration to decide on the recipient for each category. Discovery of biodiesel production from carbon dioxide concentrating oleaginous bacterium Serratia sp. ISTD04 from marble rock
The discovery is related to production of biodiesel from carbon dioxide concentrating endolithic bacterium, Serratia sp. ISTD04, isolated from marble rock, enriched by continuous enrichment in the presence of carbon dioxide in the chemostat, produces lipids inside the cells (oleaginous bacterium) and biodiesel. Carbon dioxide concentrating mechanisms of bacterium were evaluated by carboxylating enzymes and ribulose 1, 5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO), formation of lipids inside cells by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and extraction of lipids, and transesterification of lipids by methanol and sodium hydroxide produced biodiesel, energy efficiency similar to jet fuel. Discovery of a novel mechanism and pathway in Entamoeba histolytica for cell killing and virulence
Entamoeba histolytica is the causative agent of amoebiasis, a major public health problem in developing countries. Invasion of intestinal and extra-intestinal tissues, such as liver are the major manifestation of this disease. Unfortunately, detailed mechanism of cell killing and invasion is still unclear. In this manuscript a new mechanism of cell killing and invasion has been proposed. This involves biting off and ingesting distinct pieces of living human cells, resulting in cell death. After cell killing, the amoebae detached and ceased ingestion. The internalization of bites of living human cells is reminiscent of trogocytosis (from Greek trogo–, nibble) observed between immune cells but amoebic trogocytosis like ingestion differs since it results in death. Ingestion of bites was required for human cell killing. The initiation of trogocytosis follows a mechanism that has been proposed for RBC phagocytosis by the JNU group involving a number of novel molecules, including a C2 domain containing protein kinase. Attacking drug - resistant strains of Candida albicans
Drug - resistant strains of the fungus, Candida albicans , have been on the rise for several decades, striking immunocompromised patients who have undergone organ transplants, chemotherapy or HIV treatments. The efflux pump Cdr1 is one of the ATP - binding cassette (ABC) superfamily of transporters, which is one of the main ways C. albicans rejects azole antifungal agents. In this Paper of the Week, a team led by Rajendra Prasad at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in India. Read more...
